“Street Fighter” is leading the weekend box office, though its domestic debut is landing toward the lower end of Paramount Pictures’ projections. The video game adaptation earned $13 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and is expected to finish its opening weekend with about $31 million from 3,575 North American theaters.
Paramount had anticipated a debut in the mid-$30 million range for the film, which marks the first release under its distribution agreement with Legendary. Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the $82 million adaptation of Capcom’s combat-tournament game stars Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji and Callina Liang.
Audiences gave “Street Fighter” a B- CinemaScore. Critics have been less receptive, with the film holding a 42 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared with an 82 percent audience score. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Scheck described the movie as a “jumbled tonal mess” that is “only sporadically entertaining.”
Meanwhile, the Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is drawing sizable crowds, while “Whalefall” is having difficulty making a splash at the box office.
