Nigel Durham, a former drummer for the legendary rock group Saxon, has died at the age of 61. The band announced his death on social media.
In a Facebook statement, Saxon said it was “very sad” to hear of the loss of “a member of the Saxon family,” former drummer Nigel Durham. The band sent its love and thoughts to Durham’s wife, Lauretta; his daughter, Gemma; his grandchildren; and his family. No cause of death has been reported.
Saxon member Nigel Glockler also paid tribute on Facebook, writing, “RIP my friend, Nigel Durham — I will see you on the other side,” and offering love and strength to Lauretta, Durham’s daughter and family.
Durham served as Saxon’s drummer from 1987 to 1988. He replaced Glockler and played on the band’s 1988 album, Destiny.
Tributes spread quickly across social media on Saturday. Rockem Music Drum & Guitar Centre called Durham a great player and a good friend of the shop, adding that they would miss their conversations with him. Matt Black remembered Durham as a former bandmate in his Matt Black Band solo project and noted that many people knew him from his time with Saxon and ODS. He described Durham as an absolute gentleman, a lovely person and a real powerhouse drummer. Neil Benton, who said Durham was an old school friend, remembered him as a top drummer and a top guy.
