Hilary Swank Expecting Third Child, Shares Glow-Stick Pregnancy Reveal and Reflects on Later Motherhood

Hilary Swank is growing her family again. The 52-year-old Yellowjackets star and her husband, Philip Schneider, are expecting their third child together. Swank announced the news through a playful Instagram video that combined family fun with a clever pregnancy reveal.

In the clip, the lights are off while Swank’s family dances with glow sticks attached to their clothing. As Schneider and the couple’s twins move around, Swank appears in the frame, showing her baby bump—and a tiny glow-stick figure representing the baby. In her caption, she joked that people keep asking what project she is working on next, adding that this particular “project” is set to arrive in December, suggesting a winter due date.

Swank first became a mother in April 2023, when she and Schneider welcomed twins Aya and Ohm.

The actress also recently opened up to PEOPLE while supporting California Bill AB 1901, which seeks greater transparency around diaper ingredients. She shared that she had enjoyed a Mother’s Day surrounded by family and felt grateful to be in a position where she can spend time with her children in the way she wants.

According to Swank, becoming a mother later in life “just worked out” that way. She explained that it was not that she never wanted children earlier—many factors prevented it from happening sooner. Now, she said, she is able to truly take time to be with them. She even noted that because she is so present with her kids, she feels as though she gets many Mother’s Days beyond the official one.

Looking back, Swank said her earlier years were far more career-driven. Her acting work was like a baby of its own, and she devoted herself fully to developing her craft. She always knew she wanted children someday, but she did not plan exactly when or how that would happen. She admitted that if she had become a parent in her 20s or 30s, she believes she would be a different parent than she is today.

Now that her career is well established, Swank feels she has the freedom to step into work and step away when she chooses. She called that flexibility a blessing. She also said she could not have planned for things to unfold the way they did, but she is thankful for where she is. As an older mother, she believes she has more patience and emotional bandwidth for raising her twins.

Swank added that she has done significant personal work over the years. She feels that doing that inner work is important for being the best parent possible, because it helps break cycles she does not want to pass on to her children. Because she has already worked through much of it, she said she did not have to play catch-up while parenting.

Though Swank mostly keeps her children out of the public eye, she is candid about still growing as a person. She said she is not perfect and continues to do her own work, but she now has tools to handle challenges as they arise instead of searching for them in the middle of a difficult moment.

She also said her children have taught her how to live in the present—something she has long aimed for but finds harder than it sounds. For Swank, her kids are a constant reminder to stay in the moment, and it is a lesson she does not want to lose sight of.
